(Rhus typhina)

Staghorn Sumac is named for its unique fuzzy bark that resembles the velvet on the antlers of a “stag”. Native to North America, it grows as a large shrub/small tree forming thickets through its ever expanding roots. If left to expand it can form a very unique tropical, jungle-like microbiome. Very fast growing trees that can grow in poor soils and drought conditions. Female plants produce erect bunches of red berries at the top of the plant that offer a valuable fall and winter food crop for wildlife (need both a male and female plant for pollination). The berries are also edible and are commonly used to make a “pink lemonade” type drink or dried and ground into a spice used in cooking. It can also be boiled down into a natural dye. (zone 4)
