Shipping and local pickup
We are a bare root nursery, so we only ship when the plants are dormant and the ground workable. For our Zone 5b location, that is usually November and April. Seeds and scions ship throughout the Fall/Winter as we receive the orders.
We do everything we can to ensure that you get quality plants at a fair and affordable price. To help us accomplish this, we do a few things. The first is we use repurposed packing materials whenever possible. The second is we only offer small 1-2 year old plant stock through our mail order business. This keeps things easy to pack and shipping costs down as much as possible by avoiding costly surcharges for large bulky packages. Please note that due to this fact we often have to head back our taller grafted trees before shipping. This often requires a little bit of pruning on the customers end the first spring, but we feel the cost savings are worth the 5 extra minutes of pruning (please email with any questions and review our growing fruit trees page).
Shipping Costs
Although we do what we can to minimize it, the fact is, shipping bulky plants is expensive and becoming more costly by the day. Our current shipping structure is as follows:
All orders will have a flat shipping charge of $19.99
EXCEPT the following:
Scions only: $14.99
Grafted trees and larger seedlings: $29.99
FREE SHIPPING on orders of $200 or more!
Local Pickup
We are primarily an online retail nursery, but we do like to offer the option of pickup here at the nursery during the spring and fall planting seasons for our local customers. Please place your order online and select the local pickup option at checkout. You will receive an email from us when your order is ready and we will set up a time (usually on Saturdays) that work for the both of us (again the trees will be sold bare root and will only be dug in November and April) . Please do not show up at the farm looking for orders without first making an appointment, thank you!
Return & Refund Policy
Thank you for choosing Hobbs Horticulture! We want every customer to be able to enjoy the plants they purchase from us. Because we sell live plants rather than manufactured goods, our policy is designed around what we can control (the health of your plants when they leave our care) and what we cannot (how they grow once they're in yours).
Order Changes & Cancellations
If you need to change or cancel an order, contact us as soon as possible. We're happy to accommodate changes at no charge as long as the order hasn't shipped yet.
Our Arrival Guarantee
We guarantee that your bareroot plants will arrive healthy, viable, and ready to plant. Every order is carefully inspected and packed before it leaves our nursery.
If your plants arrive damaged, dried out, or otherwise not in good condition, contact us within 3 days of delivery with a few photos of the plants and packaging, and we will arrange a replacement or refund.
What We Cannot Guarantee
Because bareroot trees and plants are living organisms, we cannot guarantee their survival or growth once they have arrived safely and in good health. Long-term success depends on many factors beyond our control, including planting timing and technique, soil conditions, weather, watering, local climate, and pests or disease. We're always glad to offer planting and care guidance to help give your trees the best possible start.
Spring "Wake-Up" Guarantee
Bareroot plants are shipped dormant, and it's completely normal for them to take time before showing new growth. If your plant shows no signs of life (no buds, leaves, or new growth) by the end of its first spring, please contact us immediately at hobbs.horticulture@gmail.com so we can discuss the options available to you. Please reach out as soon as you notice an issue — claims reported well after the growing season has passed may be harder for us to resolve.
Lost or Delayed Shipments
Once a package leaves our nursery, it's in the hands of the shipping carrier. We are not liable for packages that are lost, stolen, or significantly delayed in transit. That said, if your shipment appears lost or hasn't arrived within the expected delivery window, please contact us right away so we can look into it and discuss what options may be available to you.
Our Commitment to You
We can't control what happens after a plant leaves our care, but we can control how we treat our customers. If something goes wrong, reach out — we're always willing to work with you to find a fair solution.
