(Quercus Rubra)
Red oak are one of the main mast species here on the farm supporting healthy populations of deer, turkey, blue jays, squirrels and chipmunks just to name a few. Red oak are large trees often reaching 100’ and living for hundreds of years. Not an annual producer, they often go through cycles of heavy mast years (typical of many nut trees). The acorns develop on the tree for two growing seasons and drop in early October. The acorns are higher in tannin than some of the other oak species but can still be enjoyed by humans with the right leaching and preparation. This is our local ecotype from right here on the farm, selected for the largest nuts and healthiest trees. (zone 3)
Special note: this is the favorite species of the invasive brown tail moth caterpillar. If you are in a region that is battling this pest and its obnoxious accompanying rash caused by the airborne hairs, please be aware of this fact and take special note as to where you plant it in regards to your living quarters and yard.
