Butternut Seedlings
Butternut Seedlings
(Juglans cinerea)
The butternut tree is a very hardy deciduous tree native to North America, known for its unique, sweet, and buttery flavored nuts. The nuts are encased in a green husk and have a hard, outer shell that can prove tough to crack. Butternut trees can grow to be quite large, reaching heights of 60-80 feet. They have a broad, spreading canopy that provides ample. The bark of a butternut tree is distinctive, with deep, furrowed ridges. Butternut leaves are large and compound, with leaflets arranged in pairs. They turn a beautiful yellow color in the fall. They prefer moist, well-drained soil. (Zone 3)
*Special Note: Butternut trees are susceptible to butternut canker, a fungal disease that has decimated many populations in certain areas of the country. However, there are efforts to develop resistant varieties. Until then we encourage people to grow and love the trees to preserve genetic diversity of the species until breeding efforts progress.
