Black Walnut seedlings
Black Walnut seedlings
(Juglans nigra)
Black walnuts are large native trees that produce a fairly large tough to crack, beautifully rich flavored nut. Seedling trees generally start to produce at 10-15 years old. Makes a beautiful shade tree as well as prized lumber products. Black walnut trees produce a toxin known as juglone, that can slow the growth or even kill some species of plants growing in the understory, so keep this in mind when choosing a permanent planting spot. (Partially self-fertile, plant multiple trees to ensure pollination) (zone 4)
