American Persimmon seedlings
(Diospyros virginiana)
American Persimmon is a native tree that produces an orange fruit (although this can vary), sought after for its extremely rich, sugary complex flavor once fully ripe in late fall (be warned unripe fruits are quite astringent and unpalatable!). The trees can reach an average of 60’ tall, but are often harvested by shaking the tree and allowing the ripe fruits to fall to the ground or on to a tarp for collecting. Persimmons are dioecious, meaning there are both male and female plants, so if planting seedlings you should plant several to ensure fruiting. Our seedlings owe their lineage to the Jim Claypool collection in Illinois. (zone 5)
